چکیده

A large radius secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) has been used for in situ stable isotope analyses of geological samples at the scale of 1–10 mm. However, the original reflected light microscope of the CAMECA IMS 1280 SIMS had an optical resolution of 3.5 mm, which made it difficult to accurately position the analytical beam on the sample at the mm scale. We modified the optical microscope to use ultraviolet (UV) light illumination and UV compatible optical components, keeping the same mechanical design inside the vacuum chamber. The optical resolution was improved to 1.3 mm with the UV-light microscope system. In addition, we wrote Badgerscope©, a LabVIEW based software for sample imaging, which greatly enhanced the accuracy of positioning and efficiency of instrument operation. These improvements can be adapted to other micro-beam instruments where complex optical paths may be imposed by instrument design.

The University of Hawaii Ims 1280 Ion Microprobe

Introduction: In March, 2006, the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology expects to take delivery of a new Cameca ims 1280 ion microprobe. The new ion probe will be the centerpiece of the W. M. Keck Cosmochemistry Laboratory and will be used to analyze extraterrestrial materials, including meteorites, interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), and samples returned by NASA missions. The 1280 ...

Numerical investigation of depth profiling capabilities of helium and neon ions in ion microscopy

The analysis of polymers by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been a topic of interest for many years. In recent years, the primary ion species evolved from heavy monatomic ions to cluster and massive cluster primary ions in order to preserve a maximum of organic information. The progress in less-damaging sputtering goes along with a loss in lateral resolution for 2D and 3D imaging. By...

UV photodissociation of trapped ions following ion mobility separation in a Q-ToF mass spectrometer.

An ion mobility mass spectrometer has been modified to allow optical interrogation of ions with different mass-to-charge (m/z) ratios and/or mobilities (K). An ion gating and trapping procedure has been developed which allows us to store ions for several seconds enabling UV photodissociation (UVPD).

High mass accuracy and high mass resolving power FT-ICR secondary ion mass spectrometry for biological tissue imaging.

Biological tissue imaging by secondary ion mass spectrometry has seen rapid development with the commercial availability of polyatomic primary ion sources. Endogenous lipids and other small bio-molecules can now be routinely mapped on the sub-micrometer scale. Such experiments are typically performed on time-of-flight mass spectrometers for high sensitivity and high repetition rate imaging. How...
